May Meeting
May 5, 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
The 7:30 pm general meeting for May 5th will be held at the Bigelow Gulch location.
Directions: Turn NORTH from Bigelow Gulch Rd. onto Pleasant Prairie road, which turns into Lehman Rd in approx. one ‘block’. Lehman/Pleasant Prairie is approximately 1 mile East of Argonne Rd. Continue north bound about a mile until, on the right, you see an ancient tractor on top a pile of ivy covered rock. This is the entrance. Keep to the right where the driveway forks into a loop. The meeting building is at the east side of the property.
Our guest speaker is Kaja Rotermund, a doctoral student working on the LuSEE-Night project.
This is a proof-of-concept radio telescope, which will be launched to a crater on the lunar far side. Shielded by the moon from the Earth’s radio interference, it should be able to pick up signals from back close to the origin of our universe. These “Dark Ages” were the cosmic era between the last scattering of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the time when the first stars and galaxies formed. Only cold, non-luminous hydrogen gas existed during this epoch, and so it has been largely unexplored and remains one of the least constrained frontiers of modern cosmology.
